The banner saga characters
Whenever someone portrays Viking culture inaccurately, she appears, in a puff of ocean mist and blacksmith sparks, to set the record straight. Though I know she’d love the gameplay, she’s never given Skyrim a fair shot, on account of being too busy laughing at the mispronunciation of Icelandic names. Watching The Avengers involved a lot of skeptical looks directed my way. She grumbles whenever we walk past tourist shops selling plastic horned helmets (the horns, in case you’re unaware, are not a Viking thing). Loyal defender of her culture that she is, my partner’s feathers get easily ruffled by secondhand portrayals of Vikings or Norse mythology. I didn’t want her to play the game with me. There’s a single-handed battle axe resting against her bedside table. When my mom came to visit last summer, my partner had a story (or a song) for every mountain and waterfall we drove past. Our shelves are crammed with epic poetry, archaeological resources, and dictionaries of dead languages. Most Icelanders I’ve met have a strong affinity for their heritage, but my partner is a cultural paladin. I had to start playing, but I was eager for my partner to come home. I glanced at my watch as I launched the game. Bare birch branches writhed eerily outside, and the sky, which had danced pink and green four nights prior, was coal gray.

As my computer booted and my tea steeped, I made the rounds in my apartment, securing the latches of my windows - double-paned, of course, to keep the cold out. To build on this insane amount of power you should also give her the Bloodletter title which at max rank will add a DOT (Damage Over Time) effect that deals 3 damage per turn for two turns making fights even faster. There was a storm warning in Reykjavík the night I started playing The Banner Saga. Use your other characters to whittle down the opposition's ARM and Alette can take entire armies out all by herself with ease. If you have played through TBS2, you should already be familiar with the Alette strategy of using Overwatch and Stravh's Bond to make you practically invincible. In Hard mode, it can be good to give Apostate a title like The Mountain to buff her ARM and STR durability. When the diseased enemy's turn comes up it will instead die instantly and the enemy will lose an entire turn instead of just moving up the turn order if you killed it yourself. If you see an enemy is diseased and only has 1 STR remaining you can opt to attack a different enemy. Her passive, Disease Strike, can be extremely tactical when used properly. The only downside to this ability is it has to be charged and won't trigger until Apostate's next turn and if Apostate is attacked at any time before it triggers the casting will be cancelled out.Īside from Rupture, she can still be a decent unit. When used with 3 Willpower, Rupture will detonate and kill any Dredge enemy on the field with 10 or less Strength. The key use of Apostate is her Rupture ability which can decimate the enemy if the majority of them are Dredge units. Item - Tool of Scyldings (+2 BRK Talents, +30% Crit Chance, +1 Ranged Distance) - Ranged Distance does not affect Axe Storms rangeĪpostate can be very powerful in both Normal and Easy mode but is a bit more situational in Hard difficulty. Talents - Artery Strike 3, Defy 3, Dodge 3 Add Artery Strike and any +Crit Chance item to this and you can easily kill massive enemies in one turn. The true power of this ability comes with the Death's Messenger title which at max rank adds +5 DMG to your attacks if you hit the same enemy more than once meaning that after the first axe hits every hit from then on will deal a minimum of 6 DMG. Accuracy with this attack starts at 70/80/90% depending on how much Willpower you invest and each throw's chance to hit goes down by 10% until you miss.

Oli has an excellent ability called Axe Storm where he throws axes repeatedly at an enemy dealing at least 1 DMG per hit. He might not look like much but when used properly Oli is a top tier character and will likely be your secondary damage dealer behind Iver. Item - Hunnfang (+2 BRK, +1 Move, +1 ARM on Rest) Talents - Hunker Down 3, Artery Strike 3, Divert 3 Pair Iver with Eyvind to have him use Mend on Iver's ARM to make sure he never goes down. Use this in Wave Battles and he is almost unstoppable, I have managed to get him to 45 STR in one fight. With this title, every time Iver gets a kill he will get 2 STR and 3 WILL. You want to get Iver to rank 11 as quickly as possible so you can give him the Monster Killer title. Every single one of his stats is mid to high range and he can be an effective tank but is better suited as your primary damage dealer.

If built properly Iver is an absolute powerhouse and a must have in every battle. The items you have available will probably vary greatly depending on what you managed to pick up in TBS2 with the Raven's caravan so just make do as best you can.
